In the Battle of Thermopylae, fought by an alliance of Greek city-states,the vastly outnumbered Greeks held back the enemy in an epic last stand which is recorded in history forever. Persian King Xerxes lead an army which numbered well over 100,000 men to Greece and was confronted by 300 brave Spartans, 700 Thespians and other Slave soldiers. Xerxes waited for 10 days for King Leonidas to surrender or retreat, he was left with no option,but to move. The epic battle lasted for about 3 days, and ended with the demise of the 300 Spartans.The Spartan defeat was unexpected, but was aided by a local shepherd, named Ephialtes, who had defected to the Persians, and informed Xerxes of a secret path through Thermopylae, which the Persians used to outflank the Greeks.
